Rheumatiod Arthritis: Causes , Symptoms And Treatment According To Ayurveda


RHEUMATIOD ARTHRITIS (RA) is a chronic progressive autoimmune disease which leads to inflammation and pain in the joints.

Now frst understand what does the word autoimmune disease means

Autoimmune diseases are illnesses that occur when the body tissues are mistakenly attacked by its own immune system Patients with autoimmune diseases have antibodies in their blood that target their own body tissues, where they can be associated with inflammation. Because it can affect multiple other organs of the body including heart and kidneys .

Within the science of Ayurveda, rheumatoid arthritis is viewed as a disease of immune malfunction and toxic accumulation.RA has been descrbed as Amavata in ayurveda , in which the vitiated Vata and Ama afflicts the lining of the joints , causing SHULA(PAIN) and SHOTHA(SWELLING)


  • drinking alcohol.
  • eating spicy foods.
  • taking in excess salt.
  • consuming too many sour, sweet, or sugary foods.
  • eating uncooked foods.


People in industrial areas are more at risk of rheumatoid arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis affects the joints. The disease progresses, starting from the small joints and

spreading to the big ones – fingers and legs, wrists, elbows, shoulders, knees, ankles .

In addition to being a disease of the musculoskeletal system , rheumatoid arthritis can cause inflammation in the lungs, blood vessels, various internal organs.

The risk of the disease in women is nearly three times higher. It usually occurs between the ages of 35 and 50 .

Symptoms of types of rheumatoid arthritis according to Ayurveda

Vata type arthritis :

The joints are cartilaginous  , when touched they are cold, dry. The pain is mostly when moving.

Pitta arthritis

pain is acute and burning, more severe than other types. Inflammation of the joints causes redness of the skin, chills.

Kapha-type arthritis

swelling in the joints and the area around them, as they become tight, feel cold and damp, and itch. The pain is severe and dull.

Ayurveda treatment of types of rheumatoid arthritis

Vata-type arthritis diet is used to soothe Vata

Resin and extract of the gugulu plant are used as medicine , with the forms and dosages to be determined by the Ayurvedic doctor .

Gugulu  – anti-inflammatory, expels gases and has a laxative and detoxifying effect . In addition, it lubricates the joints, relieves movement.

Use of haritaki is also useful.

Mahanarayan oil is also used to correct the imbalance in Vata . This oil restores joint mobility and keeps them healthy.

Pita Arthritis is a diet to soothe Pita

Spicy and hot foods, yogurt, spinach, tomatoes , etc. are eliminated 

. Amalaki is especially useful.

Cold coconut or castor oil on affected joints is useful .

In hot and inflamed joints, cooling compresses can be used to prevent inflammation and pain.

Kapha Arthritis uses a diet to balance Kapha

Punarnava Guggal, Bibitaki, etc. are recommended.

It is advisable to take an appointment from an ayurvedic doctor before trying the above recommendations ..

Ayurvedic Remedies for Rheumatoid Arthritis:


  • Agni Deepana and ama Pachana – Correction of body metabolism by activating the digestive fire.
  • Ama Shodhana – Removal of Ama.
  • Pathya – Following diet regimens and lifestyle changes to prevent Ama formation.
  • Shamana Chikitsa – Internal medications to reduce pain and joint inflammation.
  • Rasayana – Medications to improve immunity and joint stability.



Here are some herbs that you can try using at home in order to get some relief from the arthritis related pain But you may consult your doctor for the same.


Nirgundi is one of the most common herbs used to bring relief in joints. The plant is easily available and is known to reduce swelling as well as excessive pain. Its anti-inflammatory, anti-convulsing and anti-oxidant properties help the joints in many ways.


Ajwain acts as a natural aid to arthritis pain due to the presence of anti-inflammatory components. It also contains anesthetic properties that further help in relieving excessive pain during winter.


Dashmool literally translates to ‘ten roots’; out of which five roots are of trees and five are of shrubs. These include patala, gambhari, brihti, shalparni and more. Dashmool or Dashmula is effective in inflammatory conditions in the body or Vata Rog. Its anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, analgesic and sedative properties help cure joint pain. It is available in the form of oil and powder.


Shallaki herb is known to keep your joints strong and relieve them from any pain. It not only reduces the pain, but also helps in diminishing the swelling and further increases mobility.

Exercise is one of the best ways to improve symptoms of Arthritis

Why is exercise important?

Physical activity is a great way to increase your physical and mental health and can also reduce the symptoms of arthritis.

Being active can:

  • Reduce chance of join and back pain by 35%
  • Reduce falls and depression by 40%
  • Improve your quality of life

How much exercise should I do and how often?

Any amount of exercise is better than nothing so it is always worth starting small and gradually increasing as you get more confident.

Adults and older adults should aim for 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity per week or 75 minutes of vigorous activity per week.

It is good to remember that you don’t have to do this all in one go and breaking it up into smaller chunks is perfectly fine.

if you experience instant or severe pain you should stop and seek medical advice if necessary. If you are unsure about anything it is good to seek professional medical advice.


Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that causes chronic inflammation of the joints. It can also cause inflammation of the tissue around the joints, as well as other organs in the body. .

The main goal of Arthritis treatment is to reduce the amount of pain you’re experiencing and prevent additional damage to the joints

This is achieved by following a specifically devised diet, that allows for the Agni to become stronger and the body to begin a process of eliminating excess toxins. In fact, vast improvements can be made in terms of pain, inflammation, swelling and stiffness just by following the correct diet.
