Ayurveda distinguishes three basic functional principles, the so-called “doshas” Vata, Pitta and Kapha. They function both in our physiology as well as in nature at large.

For good and healthy functioning of mind and body, these doshas have to be in balance. Many factors influence the balance of the doshas, such as our work, our food, or the seasons.

Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine, understood the value of ‘superfoods’ way before they became trendy in the modern world. Many superfoods can be traced back thousands of years in Ayurvedic practice . They are a powerhouses of nutrition.

According to Ayurveda, watching what you eat is possibly the best way to start. “Ahar (meaning dietary habits in Ayurveda) says that food eaten should have at least one of six tastes: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent and astringent,” .

Food is transformed into vital life-force energy; eating for inner strength and immunity, a clear mind and powerful digestion is only natural. And with just a bit of planning, you can transform most meals into an immune-boosting reality.

If you are seeking to accomplish all of the above, say goodbye to temporary crash diets, and consume the Ayurvedic superfoods listed below.

WHAT IS A “SUPERFOOD”?

Superfood is a marketing term for food with supposed health benefits. The term is not commonly used by experts, dietitians and nutrition scientists, many of whom dispute that particular foods have the health benefits often claimed by their advocates.” That’s not an inspiring or particularly informative sentence, so here is the Ayurvedic take on what could make a food “super.

” According to Ayurvedic medicine, food can and should be taken as treatment for what ails you. We’ve got to eat. So why not make your food your medicine?

PURPOSE OF SUPERFOODS

  1. T he food should promote SATTVA in the mind.
  2. The food should directly nourish ojas .

Lets first understand what does the word “ SATTVA” and “ OJAS “ means , so that you can clearly understand what exactly superfoods do to your body when you consume them.

WHAT IS SATTVA?

Sattva is clarity, stillness, peace , love, compassion and kindness. This type of deep joy can be cultivated with a multitude of practices, but especially with what you eat.

Unprocessed, seasonal, whole foods are more Sattvic but there are specific foods that are “super” Sattvic!

WHAT IS OJAS?

Ojas is a subtle golden liquid said to have “the color of ghee, the taste of honey and the smell of toasted rice.” It is found in greatest concentration in the heart and adrenal glands.

Ojas is our source of strength and the power in our immune system, protecting us from disease. It supports us mentally and is the source of our creativity, patience, faith and mental resilience, so it’s important that we consume foods that increase Ojas .

By now, we’re all familiar with the term “superfood,” a description of a vegetable, fruit, nut, or seed or some other plant part that is higher on the nutritional scale and bursting with things like antioxidants, organic acids, vitamins and minerals, essential fatty acids, and more. Ayurveda, however, deems even the most common of everyday herbs and spices as super-charged foods.
